Alistair Leys

Alistair Leys

My name is Alistair Leys
I try to paint what i see.
Trying to paint walls that are tall
With humorous allegories of societies fall,
So if you know of one get in contact please.

I’ve been working for years,
But its not led to much but tears,
Like everyone i need a change
I need to explore my range;
Let’s together work through our collective fears.

Muralism is a public dream;
A consciousness stream,
An advert for our communities,
A show of our strength and unity
Against corporate advertisings propaganda regime.

Jo Baker

Jo Baker

Having worked in Parliament and the public sector for over 10 years, Jo currently works as a political campaigner for a UK wide charity. She is also a lover of art and pursues it as a hobby in her spare time.

Jo practices using a range of techniques, with life drawing and oil paintings being amongst her favourite.

She is excited to undertake this course and learn how to work on a much larger scale, as well as have the opportunity to hone and improve on some of her creative and artistic skills, and be part of creating beautiful meaningful artwork in the area, making it a vibrant and unique place to live.

Imelda Cox

Imelda Cox

Imelda grew up in Lewisham and has lived there almost her whole life so she’s really excited to undertake a course that’s so centred in her local community.

She did her degree in Technical Theatre at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, training in scenic art, set construction and prop making which she has been freelancing in for the past 4 years.

Recently Imelda has worked on some larger scale murals for exhibitions that has inspired her to pursue this avenue. She’s interested in how the art world and scenic art world intertwine in mural work and how she can transfer skills she’s developed in her practice as a scenic artist.

From the course Imelda hopes to develop her design skills, particularly in perspective and how to incorporate the shape of a building into a design, and develop her understanding of the nuances of painting exteriorly.

Amy Dolan

Amy Dolan

Originally from Surrey, Amy worked in Austria as an English teacher and has supported creative projects in Alaska and Sri Lanka.

She is currently training as an art therapist at Goldsmiths. Illustrating different characters in different environments and the awareness that creative opportunity lives in any scenario or space, is very important to her art practice.

Amy studied painting at Wimbledon College of Art, and has paint and print making processes in a lot of her images. She often explores observations and ideas in ceramics too.

Riz Mirza

Riz Mirza

Riz is an artist working with photography, book/print based art, installation, sculpture and sound. He is interested in exploring language, perception, history and objects and personal/cultural experiences and narratives re-imagined in new forms and how cultures, ideas and spaces can co- exist and develop.

In 2002, Riz co-edited and published a limited edition art book, Poetry Seen. He has participated in international residencies and festivals and his work can be found in both public and private collections such as the Museum of Fine Arts (Houston) and The National Portrait Gallery (London).

Riz is passionate about community arts education - facilitating workshops for Crisis and the NHS and outreach programmes abroad. He believes that knowledge is not static and does not only flow in one direction but that we are always learning, exchanging and developing as humans.

Ellen Rose

Ellen Rose

Ellen joins the course in the hope that she might unite her central passions, art and activism. On graduating from the Fine Art BA at CSM in 2014, she settled in her Deptford ACME studio.

Ellen’s work evolves as she navigate her intimate relationships with people and with the city. Digging for the collective subconscious through photography, drawing and painting. Ellen sees murals as welcome intervention in the mundanity of the everyday, unlike work in galleries, there are no barriers up between the artwork and the audience. The messages speak directly to the people.

She volunteers with Extinction Rebellion, Lewisham and wants to be able to use Muralism to support her fellow activists taking to the streets to fight for change and justice. Ellen thinks collective art making has great potential for healing and is keen to learn from her fellow artists and from her community.

Laura Pereda

Laura Pereda

Born and raised in Spain, Laura moved to London 7 years ago to work in the VFX Industry.

After graduating in Media Studies she has always been very conscious about how culture and visual imagery can affect communities and their identities.  Murals have a stronger and more direct impact on people's everyday life as they also have the power to transform spaces and create this imagery towards not just a place but also a moment on someone’s life.

Combining film studies with illustration, she is always willing to take part in all types of creative initiatives especially when they connect people with art causes.

After working mostly with digital techniques, having physical contact with a painting means a whole new way of facing an artistic project. "I am really excited to see how this course can help me to push my own horizons and learn about artistic team work."

Tobias Carvery

Tobias Carvery

Tobias is a 22 year old graphic design graduate from Lewisham. He recently graduated from The London College of Communication and has always had a strong interest and passion for murals. From a young age they made an impression on Tobias’ mind, so he realises the importance they have within the community.

Compared to other parts of the city, South East London has a lack of murals, and many which once stood proud are either now in poor condition or have been painted over completely. By joining The London School of Muralism, Tobias hopes to be able to restore some of the great, old murals and bring colour and warmth to walls that are currently grey and soul-less.

Tobias believes living in modern inner city environments can have severe detrimental effects on mental health, and hopes that painting murals and art will one day be regarded as an essential part of developments.

Veronica S

Veronica S

Having an Arts background and a big interest in mural painting, it has always been a dream of Veronica’s to professionalize in the Public Art field. She has a big interest in community bonding and the work towards common goals and believes muralism can play a big part in achieving this.

Painting walls gives Veronica great satisfaction and plain happiness and she hopes to share this skill with as many people as possible. She looks forward to engaging in new projects and further developing her skill set.

Liv Wright

Liv Wright

Coming from a background in immersive theatre design, Liv is driven by a passion for storytelling and collaboration. She enjoys working physically with paint and digitally collaging still and moving images as a way to respond to the site of performance and the performers within it.

Liv is excited to now be a part of making murals across the streets of London, exploring how she can rediscover the storytelling of space to now work within the spaces we inhabit and finding ways to connect to communities that use them in the hope of being part of creating pieces that are loved and evolve over time.
