She is also a lover of art and pursues it as a hobby in her spare time. Jo practices using a range of techniques, with life drawing and oil paintings being amongst her favourite. She is excited to undertake this course and learn how to work on a much larger scale, as well as have the opportunity to hone and improve on some of her creative and artistic skills, and be part of creating beautiful meaningful artwork in the area, making it a vibrant and unique place to live.</image:caption>

<image:title>Cohort One - Imelda Cox</image:title>
<image:caption>Imelda grew up in Lewisham and has lived there almost her whole life so she’s really excited to undertake a course that’s so centred in her local community. She did her degree in Technical Theatre at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, training in scenic art, set construction and prop making which she has been freelancing in for the past 4 years. Recently Imelda has worked on some larger scale murals for exhibitions that has inspired her to pursue this avenue. She’s interested in how the art world and scenic art world intertwine in mural work and how she can transfer skills she’s developed in her practice as a scenic artist. From the course Imelda hopes to develop her design skills, particularly in perspective and how to incorporate the shape of a building into a design, and develop her understanding of the nuances of painting exteriorly. She is currently training as an art therapist at Goldsmiths. Illustrating different characters in different environments and the awareness that creative opportunity lives in any scenario or space, is very important to her art practice. Amy studied painting at Wimbledon College of Art, and has paint and print making processes in a lot of her images. She often explores observations and ideas in ceramics too.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Riz is an artist working with photography, book/print based art, installation, sculpture and sound. He is interested in exploring language, perception, history and objects and personal/cultural experiences and narratives re-imagined in new forms and how cultures, ideas and spaces can co- exist and develop. In 2002, Riz co-edited and published a limited edition art book, Poetry Seen. He has participated in international residencies and festivals and his work can be found in both public and private collections such as the Museum of Fine Arts (Houston) and The National Portrait Gallery (London). Riz is passionate about community arts education - facilitating workshops for Crisis and the NHS and outreach programmes abroad. <image:title>Cohort One - Ellen Rose</image:title>
<image:caption>Ellen joins the course in the hope that she might unite her central passions, art and activism. On graduating from the Fine Art BA at CSM in 2014, she settled in her Deptford ACME studio. Ellen’s work evolves as she navigate her intimate relationships with people and with the city. Digging for the collective subconscious through photography, drawing and painting. Ellen sees murals as welcome intervention in the mundanity of the everyday, unlike work in galleries, there are no barriers up between the artwork and the audience. The messages speak directly to the people. She volunteers with Extinction Rebellion, Lewisham and wants to be able to use Muralism to support her fellow activists taking to the streets to fight for change and justice. Ellen thinks collective art making has great potential for healing and is keen to learn from her fellow artists and from her community. You can follow Ellen on Instagram.</image:caption>

<image:title>Cohort One - Laura Pereda</image:title>
<image:caption>Born and raised in Spain, Laura moved to London 7 years ago to work in the VFX Industry. After graduating in Media Studies she has always been very conscious about how culture and visual imagery can affect communities and their identities. Murals have a stronger and more direct impact on people's everyday life as they also have the power to transform spaces and create this imagery towards not just a place but also a moment on someone’s life. Combining film studies with illustration, she is always willing to take part in all types of creative initiatives especially when they connect people with art causes. After working mostly with digital techniques, having physical contact with a painting means a whole new way of facing an artistic project. "I am really excited to see how this course can help me to push my own horizons and learn about artistic team work."</image:caption>

<image:title>Cohort One - Tobias Carvery</image:title>
<image:caption>Tobias is a 22 year old graphic design graduate from Lewisham. He recently graduated from The London College of Communication and has always had a strong interest and passion for murals. From a young age they made an impression on Tobias’ mind, so he realises the importance they have within the community. Compared to other parts of the city, South East London has a lack of murals, and many which once stood proud are either now in poor condition or have been painted over completely. By joining The London School of Muralism, Tobias hopes to be able to restore some of the great, old murals and bring colour and warmth to walls that are currently grey and soul-less. Tobias believes living in modern inner city environments can have severe detrimental effects on mental health, and hopes that painting murals and art will one day be regarded as an essential part of developments.</image:caption>

She has a big interest in community bonding and the work towards common goals and believes muralism can play a big part in achieving this. Painting walls gives Veronica great satisfaction and plain happiness and she hopes to share this skill with as many people as possible. She enjoys working physically with paint and digitally collaging still and moving images as a way to respond to the site of performance and the performers within it. Liv is excited to now be a part of making murals across the streets of London, exploring how she can rediscover the storytelling of space to now work within the spaces we inhabit and finding ways to connect to communities that use them in the hope of being part of creating pieces that are loved and evolve over time. She frequently volunteers with small arts organisation around London, as a Gallery and Projects Assistant. Bella really enjoys participating in collective creative projects, with the aim of addressing contemporary societal issues and providing opportunities for young and/or underrepresented artists. <image:caption>Alicia was born and raised in the south of Spain where the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean sea merge. Then she moved to Granada to study sculpture and pictorial techniques at the School of Arts while daydreaming and hearing guitars and flamenco music. Attracted by Irezumi (traditional Japanese tattoos) and the beauty of tattooed bodies, she decided to step into this mysterious inked world. Her time as a tattoo artist, doing commissions and creating art, made her realise that the availability of art for all is incredibly important for her, and what better way to bring people and art together than muralism? She believes Muralism is a powerful way to facilitate change, empowering communities speaking directly to the viewer. Three years ago she moved to London starting a new chapter of her story. She wants to grow as an artist and combine all the knowledge she’s gained to create something new and exciting. You can follow Alicia on Instagram.</image:caption>

Here she researched various creative themes including access and rights to public space, skill sharing and the therapeutic benefits of community arts spaces. She is particularly interested in the potential for mobilising public art to pose political questions, empower people and connect them with a place. Whilst living in Mexico in 2019, she trained in etching, sculpture and oil painting. Out of this grew a desire to combine newly learnt practices with her knowledge around participatory spaces and processes, eventually leading her to this course. She was born and raised in Lewisham and is excited to reconnect with the borough through muralism.</image:caption>

<image:title>Cohort Three - Corrina Johnson-Lawik</image:title>
<image:caption>Corrina is a self taught Visual Artist from London with a background working with vulnerable people. She has a passion for art and a passion for people and has been searching for a way to bring these two worlds together. She also wanted to find a community of artists and like minded people as well as training. She was lacking in these areas because she hadn’t studied art academically and didn’t have the network…. That’s when she found the London School Of Muralism! Corrina has now joined this amazing course to become a Muralist and intends to make art that heals. By that she means art that empowers, inspires, invokes a sense of well-being and progression. Doing this in deprived areas with a participatory process makes this even more meaningful and impactful because the art now reaches out and touches the people that need it the most. Being someone who grew up in an inner city council estate, this type of work means a lot to her. She is really impressed with the skill, passion and purpose found here at LSOM and would like to take some of that and create amazing works of art with and for the people.</image:caption>

Born and raised in Shanghai, Flo moved to New Cross for study a year ago. Heera has a multidisciplinary approach to this practice, combining theory, practice and an interest in the institution of the archive. She believes in championing the democratisation of art and transgressing institutional modes of artistic production by building community networks of care and skill-sharing. She is involved in community projects and volunteering around Lewisham with an emphasis on DIY culture, repair and sustainable creative production. <image:caption>Welcome Home - one of two final projects from the First Course Students completed in April 2021. We set up to work on the theme of Migration and engaged an external group of Lewisham residents to develop a concept. We led the process with 12 participants in total - six students and 6 participants. At one point we realised we had to find a way to make the subject matter lighter, so we started to think about how would the Advertising Industry ´sell´ Migration. This is when we stumbled across an original idea: That we could take a holiday from our own prejudice.</image:caption>

<image:caption>An important aspect of what we teach is engaging others in the process of creation. So for this mural we worked with the Healthy Rivers Project. This process happened during the first lockdown so we meet online. One of the things we really wanted to get right was how to make the most of the tunnel´s potential. Since people a literally walking into the canvas and more specifically under it...we came up with the idea of seeing the river as if a person was lying on the river bed looking up... then suddenly a Kingfisher irrupts into the serene scene.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Team - Patricio Forrester</image:title>
<image:caption>Patricio Forrester is the founder of the London School of Muralism. He is also the artist behind Artmongers, an organisation specialising in public art since 2003. In his over 30 murals in the UK and overseas, he often combines elements of a situationist approach with humour and colour. His art comes from the belief that communities should take ownership of the spaces they inhabit, and changing dead spaces through participatory art can lead to enhanced wellbeing and social cohesion. Patricio came to London from Buenos Aires in 1995 to do an MFA at Goldsmiths. After graduation, he started to take his art to the streets through painting and wearing artworks everywhere he went. He then transitioned to participatory processes and large scale murals. One of his most loved works, Deptford Pearls (2001), overlooks Deptford High Street and has become iconic for the Borough. Other murals in the area include A Thousand Feet Will Follow (2019), By The Way/Marquis of Granby (2017) and Round About Now (2018). He has also made work for hospitals and refugee camps, as well as a series of interventions in remote communities in various countries such as Scotland, The Gambia, Azerbaijan, Lebanon, Jordan, Spain and Argentina. He has also made work for hospitals and refugee camps, as well as a series of interventions in remote communities in various countries such as Scotland, The Gambia, Azerbaijan, Lebanon, Jordan, Spain and Argentina.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Course (Copy) - Lionel Stanhope</image:title>
<image:caption>A Lewisham resident for over 15 years Lionel has played a major part in bringing Street Art and murals to the Borough. After taking part in the first Brockley Street Art Festival in 2015 he and others carried on with the festival for the next few years organising many paintings and art that can be seen in Brockley and surrounding areas. Lionel trained as a signwriter when leaving school and his love of Typography can be seen in many of the named rail signs locally in the now iconic ‘hotdog’ shape including Hither Green, Catford, Forest Hill and Brockley. His 25 year career in painting Theatre and Film Sets has served him well when it comes to painting large scale work and we are very pleased in having his support at the London School of Muralism. <image:caption>The Artful Dodger (A. Dee) is a first-generation veteran of the London Urban Art/Aerosol Writing scene going back to the early 1980s, serving as an influence to some of today’s top UK artists in that field. Originally being influenced by art masters such as Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Van Gogh, and later, Salvador Dali in his early art career, once he established his reputation as an urban artist he made the transition from the streets to the corporate world, evolving professionally to have clients which include LucasFilm (Star Wars), Heathrow Airport, EA Games, MTV, The South Bank Show, The Sunday Times, as well as a well-known breakfast cereal. On the community arts side of his portfolio, he has a strong background in both organising and facilitating a variety of creative mural projects and workshops. Working mainly in inner cities with disadvantaged youth and other young people (through children’s arts charities such as SP8 Of The Art), he also been involved in projects in the US and throughout Europe, as well as all over the UK. <image:caption>Participatory muralism is a powerful tool in the hands of young talented people working locally. We are creating a learning environment where mural artists pass on skills to the new generation in their own ways. We are creating community of muralists that support each other in their own projects, during and after our courses. We empower students as well as communities through the practice of participatory murals that enhance shared spaces, give them a voice and change their perception of what is possible. Our Values We believe in collaborative approaches - with co-creation being the best process to transform public spaces with art. We believe in long term local commitment which delivers real positive and sustainable change We believe that joy in making together is the most sustainable approach.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Us (Liv test top menu) - Our Story</image:title>
<image:caption>The London School of Muralism (LSoM) is an independently run course being developed by Artmongers - experts in high impact participatory muralism in South East London and abroad. Other professional artists in the field are also contributing in the learning process of the students. Over a period of eighteen months, we run three courses with up to 36 students receiving a scholarship each. This was our pilot programme after which, we complete the course model most likely to deliver successful artists with high impact in the communities they would like to work on. We have been supported by Goldsmiths, GLA, Lewisham Council and three hundred Lewisham residents who contributed through our Spacehive Campaign. Other supporters have include Brewers Paints and Network Rail. During each seven months long intensive course, the students learn a variety of skills with which they can initiate their own projects and follow through from beginning to end. Our focus is to transmit our knowledge in participation, engaging other groups in the creative process and delivering two highly impactful public facing murals at the end of the course. We want the students to further their skills to develop and sustain their own practices as well as contributing to future conversations communities might need to have in shared public spaces. Rooted in South East London, the tutoring artists, led by Patricio Forrester, come from the Fine Arts: Lionel Stanhope was originally a scenic artist and now turned street artist; Adee (Artful Dodger) started as a name writer graffiti artist then turning to muralism via a collaborative & participatory approach. Gary Drostle is a mosaic & mural artist also working with communities to develop public artworks.</image:caption>

<image:title>Cohort Five - Finn Donovan</image:title>
<image:caption>Having grown up in this city, Finn has always loved the chaos and vibrancy of London’s streets. Public art has always captured her attention, specifically street art and meaningful subversions to urban landscapes. Although she didn’t study art in higher education, Finn continued to create throughout the years and has experimented with graffiti, collage, and large-scale abstract painting. Community and participatory art are two aspects Finn is keen to foster in her developing practice. She feels the London School of Muralism will be an ideal place to nurture this understanding of how art can be used in the community, and for the community in sustainable, collaborative ways. Finn’s background is varied – from working in education, to homelessness, to arboriculture. She enjoys working with people, outdoors, and with her body. <image:caption>Ruan (they/them) is a self-taught printmaker and socially engaged artist/facilitator. They began printmaking during a long period of illness, initially to stop people from telling them to get a hobby, and have been creating ever since. Their work often explores themes of social justice and community activism, drawing inspiration from folk, outsider and protest art. They have also begun exploring their own experiences of chronic illness, neurodiversity, and queerness and the broader social context they exist within. Inseparable from their individual practice, Ruan is passionate about collaborative art-making and exploring art as a tool for social change. They have facilitated participatory projects in diverse community settings, including hospitals, schools, and community centers. A proud advocate of wonky art, they firmly believe there’s no such thing as bad drawing. <image:caption>Tessie is an actor, illustrator and born and bred North Londoner. With a natural flair for storytelling and creativity, she aims to channel her love for self-expression into two vibrant worlds: performance and visual art. Five years ago, she discovered the joy of street art and mural painting, finding freedom in transforming walls into canvases for bold, fun and meaningful stories. Her work is mainly inspired by themes of womanhood, identity, and the hidden beauty often overlooked in everyday life. She aims to celebrate the strength and subtleties of the human experience while embracing the playful, unpredictable moments that make life extraordinary. Tessie is super excited to be at LSoM and looks forward to gaining more fluidity and strength in the storytelling and structure of her work. <image:caption>Emily is an illustrator based in the Midlands, who loves creating playful images that celebrate people and places. After leaving a career in product design (drawing more inhalers and hoovers than Emily cares to admit), she was convinced she'd never draw anything fun again. Enter illustration! Emily’s work explores identity and champions the imperfect, using a mix of collage, texture, and wobbly lines. She also loves painting on walls, making her work into murals that brighten forgotten public spaces. Emily is inspired by folk art, craft, and the untold stories behind everyday objects. When she’s not illustrating, you’ll find her attempting to knit, painting signs, or hanging out with my Brummie cat, Linton. She studied Communication Design at The Glasgow School of Art where she developed an interest in immersive experiences, blurring the line between the artist and observer. She has Set Designed and Managed London based and international projects as well as working as a Design Assistant at Punchdrunk. <image:title>Cohort Five - Daniel Smalling - Bennet</image:title>
<image:caption>As a Jamaican British artist, Daniel’s practice seeks to reconcile the intricate layers of his dual identity, exploring the intersection of heritage, colonialism, escapism and personal experience. Airbrushing has become Daniel’s primary tool, not only for its technical precision but for its ability to evoke a sense of fluidity and depth that mirrors the complexities of his cultural roots. Through this medium, he creates realistic portraits that reflect both the vibrancy of Caribbean life and the nuanced nature of the diaspora experience. It has been a long-term goal of Daniel’s to push his artistic capabilities and paint bigger and bigger each year. As an educator he wants to share his passion for the arts and extend the conversations and stories that he has with the rest of the world. That is why Daniel thinks murals are so powerful, as he believes they can connect with the outside world the most. You can follow Daniel on Instagram</image:caption>

<image:title>Cohort Five - Clare Wallis</image:title>
<image:caption>Clare graduated in 2010 from Chelsea in Fine Art. She financed her way by assisting artists such as Damien Hirst and Henry Hudson. Alongside this she worked in prop houses and art department for live television shows. Her passion for painting was developed seasonally on festival sites such as Glastonbury and Boomtown where she painted large scale stages outdoors and in all weather. She soon stumbled upon scenic painting which married her background in painting and her experience in the television world. 2019 saw an opportunity to paint a 100m mural in Japan for and with a local community, this ignited the joy of illustration, the warmth of community efforts and the performance of painting. Covid halted further projects and Clare returned to England to work on feature films for the next 5 years. She now has a young family and hopes to rekindle working with communities bringing out their stories. You can follow Clare on Instagram</image:caption>

<image:title>Cohort Five - Beci Ward</image:title>
<image:caption>Beci Ward is a “Live Illustrator” specialising in capturing lived experience. She draws ideas, thoughts, feelings, and testimonials in an accessible, and vibrant way resulting in a visual narrative of sessions and workshops. Lived experience is so crucial in improving a product or a service rather than second guessing what people need, especially within marginalised communities. Her work is instantaneous, fast and she really enjoys the social element as well as the energetic nature of illustrating in this way. In-between these projects generating patterns with a lot of detail is a massive passion. This is also the go to setting she utilises to process some of the “Lived experience” testimonials as they can often be very emotional. Beci has recently undertaken solo mural projects but is keen to dive into the teamwork and collaborative element of this course and build on her skillset! <image:title>Cohort Six - Andreas Arany-Toth</image:title>
<image:caption>Andreas is a multidisciplinary designer working with large-scale digital illustrations, 3D design and sculptures with the aim of transforming spaces. His work often focuses on different emotional states, mental health, and the pressures society puts on people, minorities and the planet. In his artworks, he draws attention to the sensitivities and taboos of everyday life, such as isolation, anxiety, depression, alienation. These subjects became part of his artistic practice quite naturally, due to suffering a burnout in 2012, when working a high-powered job in the financial industry. Consequently, he began to practise and teach meditation and energy healing. Creating multi-sensory experiences is a key pillar of Andreas’ practice: he collects and recycles materials found in our surroundings and turns them into mixed-media artworks. He digitises and manipulates the final outcome with the view to create abstract patterns, which are then printed onto fabrics, interiors, and accessories. <image:caption>Cai Arfon Bellis is an artist born and raised in Lewisham. Graduating from the Slade in 2019, he then studied at the Royal Drawing School's Drawing Year 2022 where he was selected as one of the New Contemporaries 2023. His work has been displayed in institutions such as the Barbican Art Gallery and Christie's London and is held in several public and private collections including the Government art collection and the Royal Collection. His practice delves into dance music subcultures and the vital role of London’s community spaces in shaping them. Rooted in his upbringing in South London's grime and jungle scenes, his work starts as on-site observational drawings, capturing the dynamic relationship between MC, DJ, and crowd. His gestural work is made through dance and captures the beautiful moment that occurs when a dancing crowd slips into unison, where the outside world disappears and the singular melts into the whole. <image:caption>Lore is a multidisciplinary artist born in Italy and based in London, working within a cross‑cultural framework that bridges historical reference and contemporary practice. Their work uses visual language to examine presence, emotion, and the relationship between artist and environment. Lore works across acrylic, oil, pastel, linocut, jelly print, and spray paint, selecting materials according to conceptual and spatial demands rather than medium‑specific constraints. Since 2021, spray paint has become a significant part of their practice, encouraging a direct and responsive engagement with surface and scale. Their work is characterised by strong formal decisions, symbolic elements, and references to historical narratives adapted to present‑day contexts. Through this approach, Lore aims to produce work that is accessible, visually immediate, and emotionally grounded, creating meaningful engagement with diverse audiences. <image:title>Cohort Six - Eli Delbaere</image:title>
<image:caption>Eli Delbaere is a visual artist, arts educator and anarchist. Drawn to creating immersive environments via large-scale painting, his developing mural practice is known for its blend of figuration and abstraction, carving a niche for fact and fantasy to collide. Eli’s idiosyncratic visual language fuses his transsexuality with dense symbolism from his Celtic heritage, combining ancient art-making rituals with pioneering politics. Primarily self-taught, Eli seeks to create socially-engaged art which, like a form of contemporary folklore, is immersed in living culture - in sharp contrast to the separatist, purist concept of ‘fine art’ which exists as a commodity in cordoned-off elitist spaces. Embodying his beliefs that art should radically reclaim and transform space, forge intersectional social bonds, and give a voice to ‘othered’ subcultures, his imperfect work is found in non-institutional, non-hierarchical spaces such as squats, raves, streets, zines, bedrooms and DIY venues. With years of experience working with children in arts education, Eli's facilitation style emphasises intuitive play, inclusion and imagination. Follow Eli on instagram @anomeli__</image:caption>

<image:title>Cohort Six - Aisling Gallagher</image:title>
<image:caption>Aisling Gallagher is a disabled Irish artist who makes work that disrupts what is considered normal, assumed and appropriate. Their practice is about turning barriers into opportunities, allies into accomplices; figuring out how to do the best they can, and trying to do better. Their work is scrappy and DIY in every sense: the finished work, and journey to get there. They work on crip time, embracing the journey it takes for a creative seed to develop and grow to full bloom; working with their wonky body and brain as creative partners, not forces to push through at any cost. Originally from Belfast, they have lived in Deptford for over a decade. Their work has been exhibited locally at hARTSlane, Apparatus Gallery, Deptford Lounge Library, and local commissions include HOME IS WHERE THE (HE)ART IS (Lewisham Homes Community Development Fund, 2023-24); Tyre Pressure Laboratory, Liberty Festival 2022 (Spare Tyre); Resident Artist (Theatre Centre); Safe&Sound (with Good Behaviour, Sydenham Arts). <image:title>Cohort Six - Pauline Joseph</image:title>
<image:caption>Pauline has been drawing since the age of six and has developed as a self-taught artist through ongoing experimentation and practice. Her work has evolved through exploring a range of artistic approaches, leading to exhibitions in London and commissioned portrait work. Portraiture remains central to her practice, focusing on presence, identity, and emotional depth. Alongside this, she works with egg tempera and iconography, engaging with traditional techniques and symbolism to create work that is deliberate, layered, and reflective. These methods inform her interest in stillness, observation, and the spiritual or contemplative aspects of image-making. She is now moving toward large-scale works that engage directly with community, collaboration, and public spaces, aiming to reflect collective stories, cultural memory, and lived experience, while helping others find their voice through art, and meaningful creative participation together. <image:caption>Tayiba Khan is a British Bangladeshi Muslim emerging artist based in St Albans. Tayiba is self-taught and uses painting as a quiet language for what cannot always be spoken. Her practice explores emotion, movement, and perception, inviting viewers into moments of reflection shaped through colour, texture, and gesture. She is drawn to the way art can hold multiple meanings, allowing each viewer to find their own story within the work. Muralism appeals to Tayiba for its scale and openness—its ability to exist within shared spaces and become part of everyday life. With a growing interest in film set design and immersive environments. She is motivated by the transformative potential of public art: to connect communities, amplify underrepresented voices, and create environments that feel inclusive and alive.Through the London School of Muralism, she seeks to deepen her technical skills, build confidence, and continue developing a practice rooted in collaboration, curiosity, and thoughtful visual storytelling. Lottie loves the use of bold colours, patterns and abstract shapes in her work, but has noted the exciting challenge of pushing herself outside of her artistic comfort zone when starting the course. Lottie was involved with running a community arts festival in Manchester, where her desire to work within community groups was born. She recently moved to London, and with a love for connecting with people, sharing stories, experiences and collaborative creation, Lottie is excited to be joining the cohort this year.
